The town of Otočac is one of the most important centers of the Lika-Senj County. It has an area of 565.30 km2, and about 9,778 inhabitants. Due to its location, geographical position, and entrepreneurial tradition, it occupies a central place in the area it encompasses and in whose development today it is of exceptional importance.
With the aim of its further economic development, in addition to the already existing economic structure, with the chemical, construction and wood-processing industries, as well as communal and social infrastructure organizations, such as water distribution, electricity, telecommunications, post office, healthcare, education and a number of craft shops the need for further development with a predominant orientation on the so-called small and medium-sized enterprises, which would adapt the economy of the city of Otočac to the new economic structure and directions of development of the overall economy of the Republic of Croatia.
The city has a total of 120 economic entities with 1,720 employees and 221 craftsmen with 300 employees. The diversity and purity of natural assets - the waters of the Gacka River, the soil, the forest and their forest contents, and the beauty of the landscape in all seasons represent an economic potential that is still undervalued. Good road connections, the proximity of the large industrial centers of the Republic of Croatia (Zagreb and Rijeka) along with the concept of sustainable ecological development will certainly bring permanent and greater economic productivity to this area, because in today's system of supply (especially food) natural systems are becoming more and more interesting and thus more in demand.
Agriculture as an economic activity has a significant share in the overall economy of the city, with animal husbandry as the most important economic branch on small family farms of mixed type, animal husbandry / arable farming.
Better use of production capacities, along with the application of modern technological achievements, and adequate institutional support would encourage the life and growth of agricultural production.
